Case study: University of East Anglia, Ziggurats Refurbishment

We are currently managing the refurbishment of the University of East Anglia's 600 bedroom Ziggurats student accommodation. We are responsible for coordinating the design and delivery elements of the project working with the University's estate department.

The Ziggurats were designed by Sir Dennis Lasdun in the 1960’s and are Grade 11* Listed for their significance as prime examples of modern brutalist architecture.

The project is complicated by the fact that the buildings will remain occupied during the academic year. The works to the individual blocks will be undertaken in phases. Major works will be confined to the summer recess, while a highly sequenced, rolling programme of residential refurbishment will be undertaken during the occupancy period. The space pressures on the University are such that only a limited number of units will be able to be vacated at any time.

We have managed the design team in obtaining listed building consent for the project, and the scheme has been selected by English Heritage as one of the 29 pilot studies in the review of Listed Building Consents. The aim is to produce an exemplar of the consultative processes for the repair and refurbishment of historic buildings.

Specific PM Role:

  • Strategic management
  • Oversee Consent & Approvals

Benefits to client

  • Reduction in cost of strengthening scheme due to experience with disproportionate collapse
